If your media strategy still assumes summer is a slow season, you're probably missing some of the year's most valuable audience moments.
Consumers aren’t disappearing during the summer. Instead, they’ve shifted their attention. They're researching with Artificial Intelligence (AI), traveling closer to home, streaming more content, and moving between digital and physical experiences in ways that create new opportunities for brands.
Reaching them now takes more than relying on Meta and Google alone.
Across industries, regions, and countries, the Q1Media team has been watching similar shifts emerge in client campaigns. While each market looks different, the underlying changes are consistent with the latest digital marketing trends.
Audience behavior continues to evolve faster than traditional campaign planning.
We asked our team to share the shifts they're seeing firsthand and what they mean for optimizing campaigns, long-term strategies, and stretching budgets. Here are four trends changing how brands and agencies plan summer media investments.
For years, marketers measured success by their Search Engine Optimization (SEO) rankings. That still matters, but it's not the whole picture.
"Strategy now requires visibility into AI overviews, not just search rankings," says Samantha Winkler, Senior Account Executive in Philadelphia.
Brand success extends well beyond Google's first page. Consumers increasingly discover brands through AI-generated answers, local listings, and other AI-informed answers before they ever visit a website.
This shift can look like a step backward at first. Clicks and impressions may drop as people get what they need directly from AI search results without visiting a website. But the data tells a different story about the value of that traffic. In March 2026, Adobe Digital Insights found AI-referred traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic, generated 37% higher revenue per visit, and kept people onsite 48% longer while they browsed 13% more pages.
While referral traffic from AI may currently be less than the first page of Google, those visitors tend to arrive with greater intent. That changes how marketers should evaluate success. Visibility and qualified engagement matter more than raw traffic volume.
The Takeaway: Embracing AI search visibility now positions brands to win attention, even when the shift feels uncomfortable at first. With the focus shifting, staying informed about the latest digital marketing trends becomes essential for continued success.
Travel spending keeps climbing. Domestic leisure travel spending grew 2.1% in 2025 and is on track to rise another 0.9% to $909 billion in 2026, with continued growth expected in 2027 and beyond, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Travelers are also shifting toward shorter, lower-cost trips, including regional and drive markets, as they navigate rising costs.
That shift changes how advertisers should show up, not just in convention and visitors' bureaus, but also on higher education campuses, in retail foot traffic, and more. "Summer is prime time for tourism and awareness," says Ryan Blute, Director of Sales, East. CVBs now build messaging around quick, local getaways: what to do in a day, or where to go within a one- to two-hour drive. Foot traffic becomes a key metric, proving that ads drive people to a real destination, not just a click.
These seasonal shifts are key to building ad momentum and creating opportunities for other industries as well, especially with the latest digital marketing trends in 2026.
Higher education runs on a similar summer rhythm. Parents and students tour campuses and attend orientations, building the audience institutions will target for fall enrollment. Many colleges intentionally slow spending now to prepare for a bigger fall push. That pause matters more this year: 2026 marks the start of the "enrollment cliff," a demographic decline in 18-year-olds that's projected to drop applicant pools by 15% by 2029, according to CollegeData. Institutions that build awareness now will have a real advantage when that bigger fall campaign launches.
The Takeaway: Understanding how audiences move during the summer allows marketers to reach them earlier and create stronger demand heading into the fall.
Brands are moving away from a two-platform playbook and building strategies that engage audiences at every stage.
"Full-funnel advertising engages audiences at every stage, not just those ready to convert," explains Jessie Ubertini, Senior Account Operations Specialist. As consumer attention spreads across more environments, brands relying on Meta and Google alone risk reaching only audiences later in the buying journey. Full-funnel strategies create awareness earlier, reinforce messaging across channels, and improve performance when audiences are finally ready to act.
The numbers back it up. People spend 70% of their time outside the home, and 73% of consumers report favorable views of DOOH ads. Digital audio is growing just as fast: eMarketer projects 231 million U.S. listeners, and the average listener spends 50 minutes a day with podcasts, choosing from more than 540 million shows worldwide, a number that's grown 50% since 2020.
For brands and agencies still leaning on a two-channel approach, this is the moment to build awareness earlier in the journey, not just capture demand at the bottom of the funnel.
The Takeaway: The strongest campaigns don't rely on one or two platforms. They create connected experiences that move audiences across the funnel.
Static ads ask people to look. Interactive advertising formats reduce the gap between awareness and action by giving audiences an immediate next step. Whether that's finding the nearest location, exploring inventory, or requesting information, the experience shortens the path from impression to measurable engagement.
"Choose interactive ad formats like Tap-to-Maps to effectively drive audiences from engagement to measurable action," says Scott Victor, Chief Operations Officer, Product. Tap-to-Maps advertising gives audiences a direct path from ad to location, a format alcohol brands lean on heavily for seasonal summer campaigns.
The latest digital marketing trends reveal that 81% of marketers say interactive content captures attention more effectively than static formats, and that it achieves 52.6% higher overall engagement rates. For brands looking to convert attention into physical visits, interactivity is becoming a standard, not an add-on.
The Takeaway: The most effective creative doesn't just capture attention. It gives audiences an immediate path to take the next step.
The biggest takeaway isn't that marketers need more channels or more technology. It's that audience behavior continues to evolve faster than traditional campaign planning. Brands that build media strategies around how people actually discover, evaluate, and engage today will outperform those still planning seasonal assumptions.
Whether your goals are driving awareness, increasing visitation, generating qualified leads, or improving conversions, the strongest summer campaigns start by following audience behavior, not the calendar.
